What happens in lessons?

Lessons are always one to one. The teacher guides the pupil with hands & verbal instruction. You start by observing & then working with simple movements such as sitting, standing, walking & bending the knees, which are the basis of all movement. We also discuss your observations & discoveries at home & work, so that you are applying the technique to your life straight away. All work is done fully clothed, preferably with clothes you can move easily in.

Gradually you learn to observe yourself with more accuracy, how to say no to unwanted tension patterns & to invite beneficial movement patterns. Once the basics have been learned, we can then do mock ups in the lessons of situations you encounter regularly: computing, phone work, driving, housework, gardening etc. to help you apply the technique in all situations.

Where necessary, we also play games around rushing, anxiety & reacting, to help you calm your approach to life & make clearer choices. Alexander technique may look like a physical technique; in fact it is all about consciousness, clear thinking & clear choices; from which the physical poise & freedom emerges.

Introductory Groups

From time to time I will give introductory evenings or days in the technique. These will be posted on the front page of this website. Sometimes these will be general introductions, others will be specifically for musicians, riders, etc. A small charge will be made per person. If you would like to arrange one of these for your group, then please contact me. Six people minimum.
